Playwright York Walker’s Holcomb & Hart will be streaming this Friday, February 12th on Victory Garden Theater’s website. The play is part of the theater’s New Plays For a New Year festival and features other great playwrights as well. Directed by Devon De Mayo, the show takes a look into the past of Black theatre and pays respect to those who paved the way for black theatre artists of today. Walker is an award-winning writer based in Harlem, New York, and he is the inaugural recipient of the Vineyard Theatre’s Colman Domingo Award. Some of his work includes The Séance (Winner of the John Singleton Short Film Competition, and 48 Hours… in Harlem). Checkout what Walker had to say about the upcoming show, below:

“it is an opportunity to honor the Black theatre artists of the past that laid the groundwork for where we are today… I wrote this play to tell their stories and thank them for their unrelenting perseverance. This play asks the audience to look at the current state of the American Theatre and question how much progress has really been made since the days of vaudeville.”

The theme of the festival is “What do you have to say to the world?” Three playwrights took this question and created brand new 10-minute plays. Alongside Walker, playwright Mckenzie Chinn will be presenting her production Cassandra. McKenzie is a writer, filmmaker, actor, and educator based in Chicago. She is the screenwriter, producer, and lead actor of Olympia, which premiered at the 2018 LA Film Festival and won the Audience Award at the 2019 Bentonville Film Festival. Cassandra is being directed by Lili-Anne Brown and like Walker’s Holcomb & Hart, will stream for only one night on the Victory Garden Theater website. The festival pairs acclaimed directors with a playwright of their choice. The festival is showing promise of awesome work being displayed! If you would like to RSVP, go here
