A landmark of Black television is making its way to Broadway with an all-star team of Black creatives leading the charge. On June 3, 2025, producer Brian Anthony Moreland announced the development of Polly: The Musical, a new stage adaptation of the 1989 Disney film Polly and the novel by Eleanor H. Porter. Two-time Tony Award winner Debbie Allen, who directed the original film, will return to direct and choreograph the Broadway-bound production.

Joining Allen to bring this story to the stage are Emmy-winning writer and producer Lena Waithe and actor-playwright Michael Benjamin Washington, who will co-write the book. The music and lyrics will be handled by Grammy winner Siedah Garrett (Man in the Mirror) and rising musical theatre writer Joriah Kwamé (Little Miss Perfect).

Set in 1950s Alabama, Polly centers around a relentlessly optimistic young Black girl whose joy and positivity challenge the divisions of a segregated Southern town. Originally adapted for television by Debbie Allen in 1989, the film starred Keshia Knight Pulliam, Phylicia Rashad, and Dorian Harewood (The Notebook: The Musical) Barbara Montgomery (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Raisin), Vanessa Bell Calloway (Purlie Victorious, Dreamgirls), Brandon Quintin Adams (“Moonwalker,” “Mighty Ducks”), Ken Page (Ain’t Misbehavin‘, The Wiz, Cats), Brock Peters (Lost in the Stars, The Caucasian Chalk Circle), George Anthony Bell (Timbuktu), Michael Peters (Dreamgirls, Comin’ Uptown) Vickilyn Reynolds (Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk)  and featured the final screen performance of Butterfly McQueen, best known for her role as Prissy in Gone with the Wind. A sequel, Polly: Comin’ Home, aired in 1990.

“The message of Polly is one that we need today more than ever,” Allen shared. “ That the power of a single positive voice can make change in the face of adversity and divisiveness; that the voice of a child could bring unity and hope — is what Polly is about. This musical, with its joy and its unbridled hope, will shine a light on a path for every audience to find unity in their community.”

Producer Brian Moreland added, “This team of creative all-stars is exactly what Polly needs to bring her story to the stage. With Debbie’s brilliant hands back on the steering wheel, I couldn’t be more thrilled to be working together with them to share this experience with the world.”

A Legacy of Black Excellence

Debbie Allen’s return to the director’s chair for Polly is nothing short of full-circle. A Howard University alum, Kennedy Center honoree, and Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning icon, Allen has choreographed the Oscars ten times and directed for shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Empire, and Insecure. Her Broadway and Hollywood legacy spans decades—and generations.

Lena Waithe continues to blaze trails as the creator of The Chi, the screenwriter of Queen & Slim, and the producer behind A Thousand and One and Being Mary Tyler Moore. This marks another major step into theatre for the Hillman Grad founder, following her producer credit on Ain’t No Mo’.

Michael Benjamin Washington, a powerhouse in both acting and playwriting, brings a deep understanding of political and cultural storytelling, including his critically acclaimed Blueprints to Freedom: An Ode to Bayard Rustin. His turn as James Baldwin on MGM+’s Godfather of Harlem further shows his range in capturing Black icons with nuance and fire.

Music with Heart and History

Siedah Garrett’s name is synonymous with hits like Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror” and “Love You I Do” from Dreamgirls, which earned her a Grammy and an Oscar nomination. Her work is featured in MJ the Musical and The Color Purple musical film adaptation. Garrett’s songwriting has always held emotional weight—and her theatrical work is no different.

Joining her is Joriah Kwamé, the emerging force behind the viral song “Little Miss Perfect,” and co-writer of “Top of the World” for Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile. Kwamé represents the next generation of musical theatre writers—a visionary voice continuing the legacy of Black storytelling on Broadway.

With a team like this, Polly: The Musical is shaping up to be a powerful blend of nostalgia, Black girl joy, and intergenerational storytelling with modern musical edge. General management will be provided by KGM Theatricals, and additional creative team members and casting will be announced soon.

Broadway better get ready—Polly is coming, and she’s bringing hope, harmony, and a whole lot of history with her.

The Antonyo Awards were originally conceived in 2020 by Drew Shade of the multimedia company Broadway Black, which is dedicated to highlighting the achievements and successes of African American theatre artists on and off the Broadway stage. 

The inaugural ceremony, presented on Juneteenth 2020, was live-streamed on YouTube and was heralded by international press, including The New York Times, NPR and the BBC. The 2020 Antonyo Awards were the first awards show to feature non-gendered categories.

“The Antonyo Awards were born to remind ourselves of the joy that Black theatre artists have created in a fractured country,” Shade commented. “For almost 10 years Broadway Black has championed Black voices in many different ways and we are thrilled to move from the well-received initial streaming broadcast in our first year to a fully produced awards ceremony at the legendary Apollo Theater, the centerpiece of live performance in Harlem.”

Nominations for the 2022 Awards were announced on Monday, June 20, 2022 (Juneteenth Observed).

The nominating committee consisted of theatre professionals Alaina Newell, Ayanna Prescod, Brittani Samuel, Juan Michael Porter II, Eric Emauni, Drew Shade, Judith Lovell, and Cody Renard Richard.

Today marks the 62nd anniversary of the Broadway debut of Lorraine Hansberry’s landmark play A Raisin In the Sun. It was on this date that history was made as Hansberry was the first African American woman to have her play produced and performed on Broadway; it was also the first Broadway play to be directed by a Black person (Lloyd Richards). It opened at the Ethel Barrymore Theater (and later moved to the Belasco Theater) on March 11, 1959, and played for a total of 530 performances before closing on June 25, 1960.

The play centers around the Youngers: a family of five that lives in a 2-bedroom apartment on the Southside of Chicago. Set to the backdrop of post-WWII, the family’s pursuit of success is driven by the idealization of the American dream; often thwarted by the consequential effects of racism, cultural appropriation and identity, and generational differences. Hansberry gives the reader, and oftentimes the performer, an eye-opening look into the Black experience in America with questions of freedom – educational and economic – ruling the conversation.

The play echoes many of the circumstances and accounts of the playwright’s family from the 1940 Supreme Court case of Hansberry v. Lee, which gave them a voice in the judicial system to fight against racial discrimination in the housing market.  Inspired by that, she wrote parts of her truth through the language of a family who only wanted their slice of the American pie; a slice that would feed their spirits in a world that starved them of their identity. 

A Raisin In the Sun has seen a long history on Broadway and around the world. After the original production was nominated in 1960 for four Tony Awards, the story became a universal tale of hope and success. The original production starred Hollywood leading man Sidney Poitier (later succeeded by Ossie Davis), Ruby Dee, Claudia McNeil, Diana Sands, Louis Gossett, Ivan Dixon, Lonne Elder III, John Fiedler, Glynn Turman, and Ed Hall. Multiple iterations of Hansberry’s classic have graced the stage and screen over the last 62 years: 

1961 film starring the original Broadway cast. 

Raisin (a musical based on A Raisin In the Sun) debuted on Broadway in 1973. The book was written by Hansberry’s former husband and starred Joe Morton, Debbie Allen, Virginia Capers (Tony winner for Lead Actress in a Musical), Ernestine Jackson, and Ralph Carter. It also won the Tony Award for Best Musical. 

1989 tv film starring Danny Glover and Esther Rolle.

2004 Broadway revival starring Sean Combs, Audra McDonald (Tony winner for Best Featured Actress in a Play), Sanaa Lathan, and Phylicia Rashad (Tony winner for Best Actress in a Play; also the first Black woman to win this award).

2008 tv movie event starring many of the leads of the 2004 Broadway revival. 

2014 Broadway revival at the Ethel Barrymore Theater (where it originally played in 1959) starring Denzel Washington, Sophie Okonedo (Tony winner for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play), Anika Noni Rose, and LaTanya Richardson Jackson. The production also won the Tonys for Best Revival of a Play and Best Direction for Kenny Leon (who also directed the 2008 tv movie). 

The title was inspired by the Langston Hughes poem “Harlem,” which starts out with “what happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?” It is the hope in the midst of suffering and the strength in the midst of pain that makes this classic theatre work a blessing to the arts community.

On February 20th, 2021 Douglas Turner Ward (playwright, actor, director, and theatrical producer) a pillar in the Black theatre community passed away. Ward founded The Negro Ensemble Company with Robert Hooks and Gerald Krone in 1967. By the time Ward had come together with Krone and Hooks to create The Negro Ensemble Company, he had already been on Broadway in the original 1959 cast of A Raisin in The Sun. He was cast in a small role while understudying Sidney Portier. In the mid 1960s Ward created a play called Day of Absence that was about Black people disappearing from a southern town. In the production, Black actors wore whiteface makeup in order to play white characters left alone without their Black neighbors, and it showcased Ward’s scathing satirical humor when it came to writing. The production was accompanied by an article in The New York Times written by Ward titled “American Theater: For Whites Only?” The article called for a Black repertory theatre company. A year after the production, a grant in the amount of $434,000, was awarded to Ward and with the funds, The Negro Ensemble Company was created with Ward as the Artistic Director and Krone and Hooks in other leadership roles.

“Just to lighten up the heavy political raps, I started writing primarily satirical things.  And, ultimately wrote my first performance piece. It was called Star of Liberty, concerning the rebel slave Nat Turner. This little play, which was only a half hour long, was performed before an audience of nearly 5,000 people at a rally. Well, the response to this play at the rally was very thrilling. I was nineteen years old when I wrote this piece and that led me in the direction of trying to write more directly for the theatre.  Because up until then, I’d been messing around with short stories and other genres.  Sports writing had been my primary interest, but now drama was beginning to take the focus.”

Jackson was revived in January 2020 and has earned 7 pending Tony nominations. In the years after it’s founding The Negro Ensemble Company produced some important works such as The River Niger, written by Joseph A. Walker, which later opened on Broadway and won the 1974 Tony Award for best play, with Ward as director and performer. There was a 1976 film adaptation that starred Cicely Tyson, James Earl Jones and Louis Gossett, Jr.

Ward was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame in 1996 and has won many awards over his career such as an Obie, a Tony, and a Drama Desk Award. The Negro Ensemble Company earned a special Tony award.

The holiday season is in full swing, and what the world needs now more than ever is some joy. Even though family gatherings may look a bit different this year and celebrations have been scaled back, the Broadway community continues to be a beacon of light during an unexpected dark time.

The Tony Award-winning and Grammy-nominated Broadway Inspirational Voices is a diverse choir of Broadway artists united in changing lives through the power of music and service. Founded in 1994 by Michael McElroy (Rent, The Wild Party), the annual concert, much like many other special musical programmings this holiday, will be live-streamed for FREE on Sunday, December 13 7:00 pm.

The concert “A Season of Hope and Inspiration,” will feature special guests, Billy Porter, Leslie Odom Jr., Daniel J. Watts, and Shoshana Bean; with special appearances by Leslie Uggams, Debbie Allen, Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Phylicia Rashad, Vaness Williams, and more.

McElroy has described the evening as a “moment of unity to bring comfort, healing, and great joy.”  And if you’re interested in hearing some pieces from past holiday concerts, you can check out their albums Great Joy: A Gospel Christmas and Great Joy II: Around the World.
