Jennifer Hudson & Cynthia Erivo Sing The Color Purple In New Music Video

Dropped exclusively on EW.com, a new video starring Jennifer Hudson and Cynthia Erivo has been released. As previously reported, Hudson will star as “Shug Avery and Erivo as “Celie in the new Broadway revival The Color Purple. Together these two wonderful talents sing the title song in a new video as part of promotion of the musical’s return this November. In the video you’ll see the two in the studio singing and short clips from the new musical.

In the Entertainment Weekly interview, Jennifer Hudson had this to say:

“I’ve read the book, I’ve seen the film and I loved the original production on Broadway!” Hudson tells EW and People exclusively.

Hudson, 33, who plays Shug Avery, says Alice Walker’s story is “a timeless piece of American culture. The story holds a special place in my heart because, in part, it’s so honest. All of the characters are true to who they are. Each individual is an integral part of the message and it brings a complex emotion that sticks with the audience.”

Alongside Hudson & Erivo, Orange Is The New Black star Danielle Brooks will play Sofia, Olivier nominee and Broadway alum Kyle Scatliffe (Les Miserables, Scottsboro Boys) will take on the role of Harpo. Joining Scatliffe will be Isaiah Johnson (Peter and the Starcatcher, Side Show) as Mister and Joaquina Kalukango, will portray Celie’s sister, Nettie.

Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson(Dreamgirls) has dazzled the world with her matchless talent. This fall, she makes her long-awaited Broadway debut as the sultry Shug Avery in the joyous and triumphant musical The Color Purple.

Now, this American classic comes to Broadway with a powerhouse cast including celebrated London star Cynthia Erivo, who will recreate her electrifying performance as Celie, along with “Orange is the New Black” star Danielle Brooksas Sophia.
