This raises a very valid and necessary question! I find myself often wondering if the "only way" WE can make it to a stage, or on a screen is if we are singin' and dancin' (read: schuckin' and jivin'). Sigh. It's unfortunate. 'Scottsboro Boys' was magnificent. 'Motown: The Musical' is great, I'm sure. But I long for the day when the Black bodies in the theatre and/or in film or on television are just BEing, and don't have to necessarily have superpowers (ie, bomb vocals, amazing dance moves, etc.) Yes, there have been shows that featured us in non-musical capacities, but the number of us featured in musical capacities far outweighs those. :-\

This is why I write. The films and works for the stage I'm currently writing will hopefully help to change the landscape! I think that's where it's at for us now: WRITING AND PRODUCING OUR OWN WORK.
