Another Winter means more cold weather, hot chocolate, hopefully snow and — oh, another #OscarsSoWhite. Last year Broadway Black Managing Editor, April Reign, coined the term and last year instead of watching the Oscars, Black Twitter livetweeted “Coming to America” instead. I figure the same thing will happen this year (I vote we watch all six of Audra McDonald’s Tony speeches!). As #OscarsSoWhite grew more and more, more and more Black entertainers began to speak up against the Oscars. Most notably actress Jada Pinkett-Smith and director Spike Lee.

Jada wrote a tweet following the announcement stating, “At the Oscars…people of color are always welcomed to give out awards…even entertain, but we are rarely recognized for our artistic accomplishments. Should people of color refrain from participating all together? People can only treat us in the way in which we allow. With much respect in the midst of deep disappointment.” She followed the tweet later with a video of her expressing this disappointment and calling all Black entertainers to boycott the show.

Spike Lee certainly agreed with her in his own instagram post and a Hamilton quote;

#OscarsSoWhite… Again. I Would Like To Thank President Cheryl Boone Isaacs And The Board Of Governors Of The Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts And Sciences For Awarding Me an Honorary Oscar This Past November. I Am Most Appreciative. However My Wife, Mrs. Tonya Lewis Lee And I Will Not Be Attending The Oscar Ceremony This Coming February. We Cannot Support It And Mean No Disrespect To My Friends, Host Chris Rock and Producer Reggie Hudlin, President Isaacs And The Academy. But, How Is It Possible For The 2nd Consecutive Year All 20 Contenders Under The Actor Category Are White? And Let’s Not Even Get Into The Other Branches. 40 White Actors In 2 Years And No Flava At All. We Can’t Act?! WTF!! It’s No Coincidence I’m Writing This As We Celebrate The 30th Anniversary Of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s Birthday. Dr. King Said “There Comes A Time When One Must Take A Position That Is Neither Safe, Nor Politic, Nor Popular But He Must Take It Because Conscience Tells Him It’s Right”. For Too Many Years When The Oscars Nominations Are Revealed, My Office Phone Rings Off The Hook With The Media Asking Me My Opinion About The Lack Of African-Americans And This Year Was No Different. For Once, (Maybe) I Would Like The Media To Ask All The White Nominees And Studio Heads How They Feel About Another All White Ballot. If Someone Has Addressed This And I Missed It Then I Stand Mistaken. As I See It, The Academy Awards Is Not Where The “Real” Battle Is. It’s In The Executive Office Of The Hollywood Studios And TV And Cable Networks. This Is Where The Gate Keepers Decide What Gets Made And What Gets Jettisoned To “Turnaround” Or Scrap Heap. This Is What’s Important. The Gate Keepers. Those With “The Green Light” Vote. As The Great Actor Leslie Odom Jr. Sings And Dances In The Game Changing Broadway Musical HAMILTON, “I WANNA BE IN THE ROOM WHERE IT HAPPENS”. People, The Truth Is We Ain’t In Those Rooms And Until Minorities Are, The Oscar Nominees Will Remain Lilly White. (Cont’d)

A photo posted by Spike Lee (@officialspikelee) on Jan 18, 2016 at 5:03am PST

There have been huge debates all over social media whether or not actors should boycott the Oscars or would it even make a difference at all. Similarly, should we even care about the Oscars or should we just make our own? Here’s the danger with that- I think society as a whole has often equated Oscars exclusively with whiteness when in fact it shouldn’t represent that. It should represent the best in film. Period. Point blank. I’d also add, we already have shows that recognize Black entertainers on the regular but even in our own communities we don’t respect them and some A-list black celebrities don’t bother to even show up.

For some, an Oscar simply represents the highest honor in ones film career field. While I am one who thinks that art is super subjective and already wary of awards in performances, it doesn’t diminish the fact that there are many performances from Black actors that were are “award worthy.” One place I’ve noticed Black actors having some achievement in is on the stage and at the Tony Awards.

I will never forget the 2013 Tony’s when four out the eight acting categories were given to Black men and women (Cicely Tyson, Patina Miller, Coutney B. Vance and Billy Porter). Or in 2010 when it was a Fences and Fela! takeover. Even when Audra McDonald became the first person in Tony’s history to win one in every acting category possible and has the title of having the most Tony Awards as a performer.

While this isn’t to say the Tonys are completely perfect and without fault, I think over the years the Tony’s has gotten better at being more inclusive. Their nominations are usually on the money, and I can guarantee you this year Black actors will be winning again. So what makes the Tony’s so different? What are they doing right?

Well for one, I think the theatre world is more diverse and open to things that differ from the typical white storytelling narratives. I also think because the voting pool is so small and the voters actually go to the shows, their nominations are much more valid. So why can’t the academy admit their current system is broken and find ways to fix it? Well Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs responded to the Oscar boycott saying they would look into what qualifies for membership to help diversify the pool, so I guess that’s a step in the right direction. My only problem with that is, how long will it last?

The new musical, Gotta Dance, adds additional cast members to join Tony Award winner Lillias White (The Life, Cats, Chicago, Fela!), Tony nominee Andre De Shields (The Wiz, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Play On!)), Haven Burton, Georgia Engel, Lori Tan Chinn, Stefanie Powers and Nancy Ticotin.

New cast members include Tracy Jai Edwards, Madeleine Doherty, Kay Walbye, Lenora Nemetz, Alexander Aguilar, Colby Lewis, Diane Findlay and Paula Caselton.

Gotta Dance, based on the 2008 documentary of the same name, will open on December 13 at Broadway In Chicago’s Bank of America Theatre. The production is headed to Broadway in the Spring of 2016. It tells the story of an amazing group of seniors who love to dance, their ambitious and overly zealous trainers and the art form that brings them together.

As described on the production’s website: From the director/choreographer of Kinky Boots comes the incredible true story of ten determined dreamers who audition to dance at half time for a major NBA team. They have three things in common: they love to dance, they have something to prove, and they are all over 60. It isn’t until they make the cut that they find out they won’t be dancing tap, salsa or swing—they are going to bring down the house with a style that’s entirely new to them: hip hop. Don’t miss this original Broadway-bound musical about a group of ordinary seniors with extraordinary dreams as they battle pain, prejudice, self-doubt and each other for a chance to bust a move at center court in front of 20 thousand screaming fans.

Tony award-winning Broadway hit Kinky Boots is strutting its way across the pond to London’s West End for its UK premiere.

“We are thrilled and deeply honored to be bringing Kinky Boots back home to British shores, where this inspirational story is set,” said producers Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig in a statement.

Based on the film of the same name, and inspired by true events, the show tells the story of a struggling Northampton shoe factory that turns its fortunes around by catering to drag queens.

Struggling with changes in fashion and competition from abroad, Charlie (Killian Donnelly) starts to look for new markets and is persuaded by Lola (Matt Henry) to consider an expansion into “kinky boots” — women’s shoes in men’s sizes for transgender people and crossdressers.

Henry recently competed as a finalist in the UK edition of television’s “The Voice.” Some of his theatre credits include Avenue Q (National Tour), The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (Northampton), and The Harder They Come (Theatre Royal Stratford East).

At the 2013 Tony Awards, Kinky Boots won Best Musical and Best Original Score for its writer, pop star Cyndi Lauper. The New York Times referred to it as “a shameless emotional button pusher,” but praised its “zip and zeal”.

In the original film, based on the BBC documentary, Trouble at the Top: The Kinky Boot Factory, Chiwetel Ejiofor plays the drag queen who forms an unlikely business relationship with the owner of a shoe factory.

Kinky Boots will run from August 21 to September 14 at the Adelphi Theatre.

These days all the buzz about Raven-Symoné tends to be be more about her personal opinions. From her comments on her race (“I’m an American. I’m not an African-American; I’m an American”) to her opinion when a reporter said Michelle Obama looked like a monkey (“I don’t think what he’s saying is racist. Some people look like animals… Is that rude? I look like a bird”), she is definitely not afraid to take an unpopular opinion and stick to it. It was recently announced that Symoné has been named the newest co-host on television talk show The View. But before all the media hoopla, Raven-Symoné performed on Broadway in the musical Sister Act, and was getting more press from her talent, rather than her made-for-Twitter commentary.

Raven Symone & Chester Gregory In Sister Act The Musical

In 2012, Symoné took on the role of lounge singer-turned-nun Deloris Van Cartier (famously played by Whoopi Goldberg in the film of the same name), who witnesses a murder and is put in protective custody in a convent. Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique dance moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community, but in doing so blows her cover.

In the Broadway production, the role was originally played by Patina Miller, who earned a Tony Award nomination; Sister Act was also nominated for Best Musical and Best Featured Actress in a Musical. In an interview with Huffington Post, Symoné said she fell in love with the musical the moment she saw it. “I was definitely one of the audience members dancing in the aisles. I think it’s a wonderfully scored and directed and written musical. I’m very excited to be part of this.” She concluded by saying, “I’m really not the kind of person who worries about every single review. My thing is my family’s going to watch, and I don’t want to look stupid on stage. So I’m going to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

Sister Act ultimately ran for a little over a year on Broadway, to largely positive and enthusiastic reviews.

Even though you might not be familiar with Linda Twine’s name, you definitely know her work. If you’ve heard the music from Jelly’s Last Jam, Caroline Or Change, The Color Purple, or Big River (to name a few), then you’ve heard her in action. Twine is a music conductor and the musical director for the works previously named. She’s also conducted for Leslie Uggams, The Persuasions, Ben Vereen, Shirley Horne, and Linda Hopkins, among others. Twine wrote Sisters of Freedom, which was premiered by the Harlem Spiritual Ensemble. She also served as music supervisor for the Off-Broadway production Thunder Knocking on the Door.

Jeanine Tesori, who won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Original Score for Fun Home said of Twine, “For girls, you have to see it to be it. My grandfather was a composer in Italy, and he came to this country to try to fulfill that dream. I didn’t realize a career in music was available to women until I saw Linda Twine conducting Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music.”

In a separate interview, Tesori, who is the most prolific and honored female Broadway composer in history, said, “I remember seeing Linda Twine conduct when I was nineteen. She is this beautiful African-American woman who was in complete command with all of the men on stage looking at her every move.”

Twine also notably composed “Changed My Name,” a cantata inspired by slave women Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman, and written for two actresses, four soloists, and a chorus. Her work can be seen and heard in the books and CDs of the Silver Burdett Publishing company, which are used by many public schools in the United States, ensuring that her legacy will endure.

Corey Mitchell, a teacher from the Northwest School of the Arts in Charlotte, NC, won the very first Theatre Education Award, presented by the Tony Awards and Carnegie Mellon University. The award was televised, and this is the first Tony Award that awards educators and reflects gratitude for educators. Nominees must be current teachers at an accredited K-to-12 institution or recognized community theater organization anywhere in the United States. More than 4,000 submissions were received, and included a $10,000 cash award.

“The submissions for these educators by their students and colleagues were extremely moving, and the lasting impact they have made was made very evident by the videos and stories they shared,” said Charlotte St. Martin, President of The Broadway League, and Heather Hitchens, President of the American Theatre Wing, in a joint statement. “We are extremely honored to have this opportunity to recognize their outstanding work in this manner and are thrilled to have them join us on Sunday evening at the Tony Awards.”

Mitchell has taught drama for the past 14 years and has headed more than 70 school productions, including Pippin, Aida, Rent, and Hair. Most notably, in 2013, he led a cast, crew, and orchestra comprising of more than 100 people in a production of The Color Purple to the International Thespian Festival in Nebraska, and raised more than $170,000 in the process.

In an interview to the Star News in Wilmington, NC, Mitchell said, “The things we do in the theater as arts educators are so vital. They help to make students complete. I’m just grateful that the Tony Awards are acknowledging the contributions of all teachers.” He added, “No one takes a star bow at my school. I don’t believe in stars. I believe that the work itself is paramount, and that’s what should take center stage and not your own ego.”

The cast of Something Rotten recently took time away from performances at the St. James Theatre to hit the studio and record “Welcome to the Tony Race.” The catchy tune name-drops several Tony-nominated actors, actresses and productions as it invites audiences to 2015’s biggest evening on Broadway. Set to the melody of one of the show’s hit songs, “Welcome to the Renaissance,” this revised tune features actor Michael James Scott, as does the original.

Scott plays the Minstrel in Something Rotten, a musical about two brothers in the 1590s who attempt to outdo Shakespeare by writing the world’s first musical. Nominated for an impressive 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the cast of Something Rotten will be performing during the Tony Awards this Sunday, June 7. But, for now, enjoy their little ditty that is sure to get you excited for the telecast that begins at 8pm eastern.

Making his triumphant return to the stage after a decade, Taye Diggs will star as the lead in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, beginning July 22 for a 12 week run at the Belasco Theatre. Diggs, the original Benny the landlord in Rent, will undoubtedly add his own unique flare to the role as the first Black man to play the role in New York. Diggs will be joined by Rebecca Naomi Jones, Broadway’s first Black Yitzak.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch tells the story of a fictional rock ‘n’ roll band, fronted by internationally ignored song stylist Hedwig, a transgender woman from communist East Berlin. Between rock songs, Hedwig regales the audience with stories about her life, including her botched sex change operation and her relocation to Kansas. The Broadway production of Hedwig, with a book by John Cameron Mitchell and music and lyrics by Stephen Trask, opened in April of 2014 with Neil Patrick Harris in the title role, and won Best Musical Revival at the 2014 Tony Awards, the Drama Desk Awards, Drama League Awards, and Outer Critics Circle Awards. Previous Hedwigs include John Cameron Mitchell, who wrote the play and originated the role, Neil Patrick Harris, Andrew Rannells, and Michael C. Hall. Hedwig currently stars Darren Criss, perhaps best known for his role on FOX TV’s Glee. Criss departs the show on July 19 and Diggs will begin his stint on July 22.

“Taye is fantastic—he has theater cred, he has pop culture cred, he can sing, he can act, he can dance, he’s smart and he’s sexy,” said lead producer David Binder. “That’s why we cast him.” Diggs’ recent work has included both film and television work, and he is currently in production of season 2 of the TNT crime drama Murder in the First.
