Joaquina Kalukango Joins The Wild Party

Due to scheduling conflicts that resulted in replacement casting, Joaquina Kalukango (Holler If Ya Hear Me, Godspell) has recently been added to the cast of Andrew Lippa’s The Wild Party at New York City Center. She has replaced Ciara Renee (Pippin, Big Fish) and will play the role of Kate. The production stars Tony-nominated Brandon Victor Dixon (Color Purple, Motown) and others.

Adapted from a book-length poem written in and about the Roaring Twenties, The Wild Party tells the story of one wild evening in the Manhattan apartment shared by Queenie and Burrs, a vaudeville dancer and a vaudeville clown. In a relationship marked by vicious behavior and recklessness (mirroring the time in which they live), they decide to throw a party to end all parties. As the guests arrive, we meet an assortment of people living on the edge. Queenie and Burrs set out to make each other jealous, but Queenie begins to fall in love with her conquest named Mr. Black. After a long night of decadence, Burrs’ jealousy erupts and he comes to a violent end at Mr. Black’s hand. In the stark light of a new day, Queenie moves out into a brighter world, although not necessarily a brighter future, leaving the passed-out revelers in her wake.

NYTimes.com featured Joaquina Kalukango in their “In Performance” series as Kalukango gives a deft and skillful performance of a piece from Eve Ensler‘s Emotional Creatures. New York City Center’s Encores! Off-Center series will produce The Wild Party, currently in rehearsals, as the final production of its 2015 season. Brandon Victor Dixon Replaces Joshua Henry in The Wild Party

Brandon Victor Dixon will replace Joshua Henry in Andrew Lippa’s The Wild Party as Mr. Black, originally played by Taye Diggs (who will be back on Broadway In Hedwig soon).

Dixon is best known for his Tony nominated role as Harpo in The Color Purple (2005) and Motown: The Musical (2013) as Berry Gordy Jr. He is currently starring in the Evening Standard Award winning Scottsboro Boys in London at the Garrick Theatre. His producing credits include Of Mice and Men (2014) and the Tony Award winning Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2014).

Andrew Lippa’s tragic Jazz Age love story The Wild Party follows 1920s party girl Queenie (two-time Tony Award winner Sutton Foster) over the course of one decadent, booze-soaked night as she encounters vaudevillians, hookers, and a handsome stranger (Dixon) who offers the hope of a less tawdry life. The Wild Party is based on Joseph Moncure March’s searing 1928 narrative poem of the same name, and premiered Off-Broadway in 2000.

The Wild Party is directed by Leigh Silverman and opens July 15. The show will run until July 18. All tickets begin at $25 and can be purchased at the New York City Center Box Office (West 55th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues), through CityTix at 212-581-1212, or online at NYCityCenter.org.

Joshua Henry Returns to Encores for The Wild Party

If you didn’t get the chance to see the brilliance that was The Scottsboro Boys or Violet, have no fear. Joshua Henry makes his return to the New York City Center’s stage alongside former co-star Sutton Foster (Violet) in Andrew Lippa’s The Wild Party as Mr. Black, originally played by Taye Diggs (who will be back on Broadway In Hedwig soon)

Andrew Lippa’s tragic Jazz Age love story The Wild Party follows 1920s party girl Queenie (two-time Tony Award winner Sutton Foster) over the course of one decadent, booze-soaked night as she encounters vaudevillians, hookers, and a handsome stranger (Joshua Henry) who offers the hope of a less tawdry life. The Wild Party is based on Joseph Moncure March’s searing 1928 narrative poem of the same name, and premiered Off-Broadway in 2000.

Henry most recently starred Roundabout Theatre Company’s Tony Award nominated production of Violet. Starring alongside Sutton Foster, he was nominated for the Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for his performance as Flick. You may also remember Joshua from his performance as Jake in the Tony Award Winning revival of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess and most notably his performance as Haywood Patterson in the musical The Scottsboro Boys, which earned him a Tony Award nomination for “Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical.” Other Broadway credits include American Idiot and In the Heights.

The Wild Party is directed by Leigh Silverman (who also directed Violet), and will bring together two of Broadway’s beloved actors together once again, and if their chemistry is anything like it was in Violet, consider my ticket bought.
