“I adore the intersection of musical theatre and Blackness,” explains Hinds. “With Kander and Ebb we saw it in Kiss of the Spider Woman and Chicago before their amazing work on Scottsboro Boys, and [this] show is a blend of my personal experiences with their music.”

Hinds first presented #KanderandEbb at Toronto’s Buddies in Bad Times last December. After receiving a stammering standing ovation from a full house at the world’s largest LGBTQ theater complex, the show received a remount this fall followed by an additional run at the Mainline Theater in Montreal.

Few know that before Taye Diggs, Hinds was actually the first Black actor to play the role of Hedwig in John Cameron Mitchell’s punk-rock musical Hedwig & the Angry Inch. Since then, Hinds has become an international name, playing in venues everywhere from Montreal to L.A. to Rio de Janeiro. The artist has also performed with headliners including Liza Minnelli, Todrick Hall, Debbie Reynolds, and Lady Bunny.

Composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb are one of the most prolific songwriting duos in musical theater history. Their 50-year collaboration produced such great works as Chicago, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Steel Pier, New York, New York, and my personal favorite, The Scottsboro Boys.

Ryan G. Hinds in #KanderAndEbb premieres at Don’t Tell Mama on Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. For tickets call (212) 757-0788 or visit DontTellMamaNYC.com.

The rock musical about transgender rock star Hedwig (Diggs) traverses her journey through communist East Berlin, a botched sexual reassignment operation, the fall of the Berlin wall, loving and losing, and her unending quest to find her true self. Written by 2015 Tony honoree John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask, and recipient of the 2014 Tony Award-winning Best Musical Revival, Hedwig and the Angry Inch will have been the Belasco Theatre’s longest running show when it closes. The closing is scheduled for September 13, 2015 after 22 previews and 506 regular performances.

While Diggs will be donning his awesome wig and pair of golden boots until the end of the Broadway show, fans of the show can raise their hands for the tour scheduled to begin in San Francisco on October 4, 2016. Diggs closes out Hedwig and The Angry Inch with panache, raw emotion and sizzling hot energy. And as Hedwig would say, that’s not bad for a “slip of a girlyboy from Communist East Berlin.”

His remarkably blue glittered eyes and magenta pursed lips have been staring from billboards and banners for months now. Taye Diggs took the stage in his dream role as “Hedwig” in the rock musical comeback of 2014 Hedwig and the Angry Inch toward the end of July. The Syracuse University musical theater graduate has said that he jumps at any chance to return to theatre. This time it has been a high-heeled leap of joy for the “The Best Man” star whose last Broadway appearance was in 2003-04 in Wicked.

If the July 22 opening night was any indication, with a thunderous standing ovation by the audience, Hedwig producers have found one of the best performers for the multi-Tony winning show. When it officially opened in April 2014, Neil Patrick Harris had the title role – for which he won a Tony. He was followed by Tony nominee Andrew Rannells, Golden Globe winner Michael C. Hall, John Cameron Mitchell, who is the Hedwig playwright (along with composer & lyricist, Stephen Trask), and Darren Criss (Glee).

Diggs now has become that proverbial first Black person to be such and such. But a first it is.

Via Instagram (@tayediggsinsta), the film and television star – who debuted on Broadway with Carousel (1994-95) and went on to appear in Rent – stated Hedwig is his most challenging role he has played. Challenging because of the high heels, the crotch shorts, the German accent, the rocked out vocals. Maybe. Perhaps, more so, the tinge of hopelessness that speaks to trapped bodies amid intolerance.

Well, it is a long way from the “ultimate acting challenge” of Diggs’ Julliard graduate character “Sean James” who had to transform into a ghetto lovin’ kidnapping gangsta in the satirical Malibu’s Most Wanted (2003) alongside the Anthony Anderson character “PJ” – straight outta Pasadena Playhouse. Just a moment… I had to do a simultaneous LMAO and SMDH for even mentioning that Jamie Kennedy film right now. But as I think about it, maybe it is appropriate. The film’s tagline was: Ever feel like you didn’t belong? (it was about a privileged White guy who longed to be something he wasn’t – “the biggest rapper that ever was”).

In a time when movements exist for Black lives to matter and LGBTQ rights to improve, it’s not surprising that Diggs would be chosen to portray the genderqueer role and to continue the mission of blurring lines between male and female, straight and gay, Black and White. There is a lot of not belonging nowadays, a lot of searching for right and wrong. Diggs, in an interview with New York Times Magazine, said: “Since I was a kid, I’ve been trying to wean myself off of seeings things as right and wrong and black and white and good and bad.”

When Hedwig opened Off-Broadway in 1998, it served as a statement for freedom and self-acceptance: an East German singer, once known as Hansel, assumes a female persona after a botched sex change operation in order to marry an American man and escape a communist country. After as many as 857 performances plus a 2001 award-winning film adaptation, an anthem persists. Mitchell has explained that Hedwig is meant to be a queer voice as opposed to a transgender voice. “She’s forced into this (sex change) operation… it’s not a choice,” he stated. “Hedwig doesn’t speak for any trans community because she was… mutilated.” He described the character as “more than a woman or a man.” “She’s a gender of one, and that is accidentally so beautiful.”

Diggs as “Hedwig” is no accident, and it definitely is beautiful. A son of artistic parents (his mother an actress and teacher, his father a visual artist), the 44-year-old sex symbol has been preparing for such a role ever since his 1998 film debut How Stella Got Her Groove Back. His Twitter (@tayediggs) bio simply states: “I’m serious chocolate and don’t get it twisted.” Need I say, chocolate is good for you.

Mitchell – who has compared each Hedwig, beginning with Harris, to a comic book superhero (Superman, Black Widow, Iron Man, Professor X and Spiderman) – has yet to don Diggs an alias. Dare I call it… Black Panther. Diggs, who has said his favorite movie is Pretty Woman, will be in high hair and glitter glam through October 11 at Belasco Theatre.

When you step into a pair of high heels, you better be sure you know how to sashay your way around in them and when you’re Taye Diggs and you’re slipping on heels previously worn by Neil Patrick Harris, Michael C. Hall, and Darren Criss, the stakes are much higher than those heels. As everyone knows by now, Diggs made his debut as the latest transgender heroine of Broadway’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch on July 22.

As we previously reported, Diggs, who first appeared on Broadway in Rent, is the first African-American to take on the transgender rock singer role. This will be the first time audiences have seen Diggs on the stage since he starred in 2005’s A Soldier’s Play.

There has been some discussion that Diggs’ portrayal of “Hedwig” contributes to the emasculation of African-American men. The list of Black male performers who have cross-dressed in roles is long and has had some accusing these performers of perpetuating racial stereotypes.

Comedian Dave Chappelle, who refused to wear a dress while filming “Blue Streak” with Martin Lawrence, once told Oprah Winfrey that “I don’t need no dress to be funny,” and suggested that Black male performers who cross-dressed for roles had negative effects on the black male image.

However, for Diggs, Hedwig is a role that he told the New York Times “is everything I’ve ever wished for.” He further added that he’d told his ex-wife Tony-winning actress Idina Menzel “‘I want a chance to show everybody everything. I can dance and I can sing, and everybody knows I can act.’ ’’

Judging from the reviews and reactions he’s gotten from social media, it’s a chance he won’t regret taking.

Debut performance – Sold Out!

When I first saw advertisements for Hamilton, I remember thinking to myself, “A musical about Alexander Hamilton. Lin Manuel, what are you doing?” Then the casting was revealed, and I discovered that the majority of the actors and actresses in the production are of color. Now, for some it’s not a big deal. But it was huge for me.

The way my high school history books were written, every single one of those historical figures was white. Manuel did something here. He could have maintained historical “accuracy.” However, this musical wasn’t about that. He threw out the typical format and hired people of color to fill these roles and guess what? It didn’t matter. Hamilton became an instant hit and no one is criticizing it for its colorblind casting because it’s just that good. The actors make these characters believable regardless of their skin color. What Manuel wanted to create was art, and art doesn’t have a race. It has an impact.

I remember going to see Keke Palmer in Cinderella back in 2014, looking around the theatre, and being brought to tears. I cried because I saw hundreds – and I’m not exaggerating — of young Black girls in tiaras and pretty dresses in the theatre. They were there to see Keke and to experience theatre, some for the very first time. And there was a Black girl playing the princess on the stage. I was so overcome with happiness and joy because it was so important for them, and me, to see. When I was leaving the theatre, a little girl said, “Mommy, I want to do that!” And she can!

What if this could happen all the time? I know we have shows like The Color Purple and Motown, which have no choice but to cast Black actors. However, those shows come and go (that’s another article, for another time). What I’m talking about is something a little different. Oftentimes when I’m catching a show on Broadway, I rarely see faces of color on the stage in lead or featured roles. Sure, I usually can spot them in the ensemble or they may be the understudy, but where’s our full-time Black Elphaba? Does Captain Hook have to be white? Aren’t there Black LGBTQ youth too? Black people go to Paris, right? I’m sure there are tons of Black girls and boys that never want to grow up, so where is their Finding Neverland?

There’s a term in theatre and film called “non-traditional” casting. That term is basically code for non-white actors. For the life of me, I’ve been trying to figure out why they call actors of color “non-traditional.” Are our stories and lives not “traditional?” Do we lack a certain trait to make us “traditional?” What does this even mean?

The answer is something I’ve been trying to discern but, at this point, I don’t think it matters. In the past three years I’ve seen more actors of color in roles that for so long have been cast with predominately white actors. Taye Diggs as Hedwig? Norm Lewis as The Phantom? Condola Rashad as Juliet? Even Trip To Bountiful, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Cat On A Hot Tin Roof cast all Black actors during their Broadway runs. When I see that, it’s a great feeling. My question, then, is why doesn’t it happen more? Is it so far off to believe that as people of color we, too, can live these experiences?

I say these things with a spirit of hope, as I was once a young Black girl attending the theatre. I know the impact of seeing actors on stage that look like you. I also know what it feels like to be automatically ruled out of a role based on the color of your skin. Even now as a Performing Arts teacher, I want to be able to take my students to shows where they can look at that stage and turn to me and say “Ms. Harper-Davis, I’m gonna do that.”

Yes, scholar. Yes, you will.

A fantastic cast and production, and one of their best selling shows ever. In the photo are Jarran Stepney-Muse as Will Parker and Joy Matthews as Aunt Eller

Hedwig and the Angry Inch has been a Broadway sensation since its revival in 2014. As we previously reported, Taye Diggs (Rent, Chicago) will take over a 12-week run as the titular character, and I could not be more thrilled. This will be the first time we have seen Diggs on the stage since 2005, in A Soldier’s Play. Diggs is the sixth actor to schmear the glitter and strap on the heels, but he is the first African American to take on the genderqueer rock singer.

The press has started to ramp up in anticipation of Diggs’ debut as Broadway’s first black Hedwig. Diggs has handled it all with an air of grace that is only known to him. The press has not been known for their “gentle touch” when it comes to issues of race and sexual orientation but they seem to have put on the kid gloves this time. When Diggs was asked on “Entertainment Tonight” about how his son was reacting to him in this role, he had this to say,

“[Walker] is so damn adjusted. He’s unfazed. I think he’s on the path of being a really cool adult.”

Rebecca Naomi Jones took over the role of Yitzhak in Hedwig in April 2015, as we reported here. She has been the husband to Glee star Darren Criss’ Hedwig but now will be in support of the first Black man to take on the role. The two sat down recently at The Labs Club Restaurant to talk about being the first “chocolate” husband and wife duo for these roles and the flavor they are bringing to these characters.

Taye Diggs will take over the role on July 22, 2015 at the Belasco Theatre, 111 W. 44th St. New York, New York 10036.

Taye Diggs returns to Broadway after nearly a decade, and makes history as the first African American to take on the lead role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a musical about a band led by a singer named Hedwig, who assumes a female persona after a botched sex change operation (which was performed to allow him to marry an American man and escape East Germany). Reprising a role that has been played by Neil Patrick Harris, Diggs will star in a limited 12-week engagement at the Belasco Theatre in New York; this will mark his first New York stage role since the revival of A Soldier’s Play in 2005.

However, some have pointed out that because of Diggs’ portrayal of a transgender character, he is contributing to the emasculation of black men. Actors such as Martin Lawrence, Eddie Murphy, and Tyler Perry have all taken on roles that could be described as minstrel performances and perpetuating racial stereotypes.

Dave Chappelle famously recounted in an interview with Oprah Winfrey that while filming “Blue Streak” with Martin Lawrence, the producer of the film told him they had adjusted the script and in the next scene Lawrence’s character would break him out of jail, but he would have to be dressed as a prostitute. After Chappelle refused, the director came in to stress how funny it would be for him to wear the dress. Finally, after seeing that Chappelle was not going to change his mind, a new script was presented to him.

Taking a slightly opposing view, in an interview with Vibe magazine, Chris Rock said, “I mean, hey, lots of comedians dress up like women, not just Black. It’s one of the oldest tricks in the book. Men in drag…There was Mrs. Doubtfire. [Adam] Sandler’s next movies is Jack and Jill. He plays his brother and sister. [The Black community] doesn’t have that many movies, so if there’s only four Black movies in a year and two of them star Black men in dresses, I could see how that would upset some people. But that’s a job for some people. Tyler Perry is great in a dress, but I don’t want to see Denzel or Will Smith in a dress. And I don’t think we’re in any danger of seeing that.”

The larger (and arguably more notable) issue is that Diggs was cast in a role that does not deal in any sort of racial components; it is a racially neutral role, and the director and producers should be lauded for making a choice based on talent, which should always be the case. Certainly, the lack of traditional black male images in the media is an issue that needs to be addressed, but black men are not monolithic, and the public should be able to see all types of roles that run the gamut. That is what needs to be focused on; ensuring that there is material for audiences to digest that represents diverse aspects of the black male experience.

Making his triumphant return to the stage after a decade, Taye Diggs will star as the lead in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, beginning July 22 for a 12 week run at the Belasco Theatre. Diggs, the original Benny the landlord in Rent, will undoubtedly add his own unique flare to the role as the first Black man to play the role in New York. Diggs will be joined by Rebecca Naomi Jones, Broadway’s first Black Yitzak.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch tells the story of a fictional rock ‘n’ roll band, fronted by internationally ignored song stylist Hedwig, a transgender woman from communist East Berlin. Between rock songs, Hedwig regales the audience with stories about her life, including her botched sex change operation and her relocation to Kansas. The Broadway production of Hedwig, with a book by John Cameron Mitchell and music and lyrics by Stephen Trask, opened in April of 2014 with Neil Patrick Harris in the title role, and won Best Musical Revival at the 2014 Tony Awards, the Drama Desk Awards, Drama League Awards, and Outer Critics Circle Awards. Previous Hedwigs include John Cameron Mitchell, who wrote the play and originated the role, Neil Patrick Harris, Andrew Rannells, and Michael C. Hall. Hedwig currently stars Darren Criss, perhaps best known for his role on FOX TV’s Glee. Criss departs the show on July 19 and Diggs will begin his stint on July 22.

“Taye is fantastic—he has theater cred, he has pop culture cred, he can sing, he can act, he can dance, he’s smart and he’s sexy,” said lead producer David Binder. “That’s why we cast him.” Diggs’ recent work has included both film and television work, and he is currently in production of season 2 of the TNT crime drama Murder in the First. Diggs last appeared on stage in the 2005 Off-Broadway revival of A Soldier’s Play.

Taye Diggs may return to Broadway is a big enough headline. However, there is more. Buzz has been heavily swirling today since entertainment reporter Jason Lynch tweeted about the next replacement in the hit Broadway musical Hedwig And The Angry Inch. Taye Diggs.

News from the #TurnerUpfront press luncheon: looks like Taye Diggs is in line to be the next star of Hedwig & the Angry Inch on Broadway.

— Jason Lynch (@jasonlynch) May 13, 2015

The current star of Hedwig, Darren Criss, is scheduled to play the show until July 19th. There hasn’t been any confirmation that this is a definite. However, we are thrilled that Diggs’ is willing to take this leap into something new and different from his body of work. If this is true, Diggs’ would join the small list of stars to take on this role, including Neil Patrick Harris, who won the Tony Award for his performance last year, as well as, Michael C. Hall (“Dexter”), and the show’s creator and original off-Broadway star, John Cameron Mitchell. He would also be the first African American to play the role. He would join Rebecca Naomi Jones who is currently co-starring as Yitzhak

Diggs’ has been seen on the Broadway stage in Rent, Carousel, Chicago. As well as on your television screen in “The Good Wife,” “Private Practice,” “Murder in the First,” “Kevin Hill”. Some of your favorite movies he’s starred in also; “The Best Man,” “The Wood,” “Brown Sugar,” and “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” with Angela Bassett.

Today, Diggs’ posted a photo of him getting a special “I love Daddy” tattoo in his son’s handwriting. Right in front of him you can see the Hedwig book. Could this be a hint?

We are excited for him and the future of this show, if this is true. It shows a great big step towards more diversity for the Broadway stage, If it doesn’t work out we can always campaign for him to play Lola in Kinky Boots! Yay or nay?
