]]> Ahead of its Broadway debut, Thoughts of a Colored Man, written by Keenan Scott II, will engage audiences with a new initiative sponsored by The Black Public Relations Society – New York (BPRS), Black Theatre Network (BTN), and SimonSays Entertainment (SSE). The program is entitled “Black Inspiration: An Artistic Continuum, A Dialogue,” and is a new virtual audience development series that will serve as a kickoff event for the Broadway-bound production. It is meant to foster a community of collaboration and communication between the production and potential audiences.

The play will be directed by Steve H. Broadnax III and produced by Brian Moreland, Ron Simons, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Samira Wiley, Diana DiMenna, and Scott himself. The play will be making history as one of the few productions on Broadway to be written by a Black man, directed by a Black man, produced by a predominately Black team, and focusing on the narratives of the Black male experience. The event will feature a panel of the creative team reading excerpts that “will share their personal narratives, what has inspired them, and how they hope to inspire others through Thoughts of a Colored Man. 

The play, which fuses the artistic mediums of spoken word, slam poetry, and rhythm, intertwine to present a new voice in American theater. The “thoughts of a colored man” are told over the course of a single day, where seven men vulnerably retell their own stories and echo the sentiments of their friends and brothers beyond the traditional settings of basketball courts and barbershops that typically represent the Black male aesthetic. BPRS – NY President and CEO, Tracey Wood Mendelsohn said, “The lens of ‘Black Inspiration’ allows us to explore all aspects of our historic and ongoing role in contributing to society, and there is no better place to start than the arts.”

Keenan Scott II’s Thoughts of a Colored Man will debut on Broadway for the upcoming 2021-2022 season. Broadway is currently set to reopen after May 2021.


Described as a play  “which weaves spoken word, slam poetry, and rhythm into a mosaic of the inner lives of Black men, is told over the course of a single day in the heart of Brooklyn, as the ‘hopes, sorrows, fears, and joys of seven men reverberate far beyond the barbershops and basketball courts of their community.”

Thoughts of a Colored Man premiered worldwide in 2019 at the Syracuse Stage with direction by Steve H. Broadnax III, who will also direct the show on Broadway.

This will be a Broadway debut for both Keenan and Steve.

]]> Inspiration and fear seem to be linked together. Inspiration strikes, an idea is planted and a story written. The entire show from the actor’s first entrance to the final curtain call and every element reveals itself as if it were an explicitly visual memory. The first draft is on paper and ready for review when fear plants its roots. The trust in the gift, the knowing of the impact of the story, none of that matters now. All that seems to matter is fear. It could be the inexperience or not knowing where the finish line resides, one thing is for certain, the vision and execution come to a standstill, but 2021 will be different. Roundabout Theatre has an option for you. 

Roundabout Theatre Company announces the second session of Roundabout TheatreLab, a program of interactive workshops designed to connect audiences interested in exploring the crafts of theatrical writing and directing, directly with Roundabout artists. This is the chance to create with guidance and explore with experience. 

Roundabout Theatre Company presents a variety of plays, musicals and new works on its five stages: Broadway’s American Airlines Theatre, Studio 54 and Stephen Sondheim Theatre, and Off-Broadway’s Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre, which houses the Laura Pels Theatre and Black Box Theatre.

The Theatre Lab will begin in February 2021 and offers five course options with Directors Steve H. Broadnax III (upcoming Thoughts of a Colored Man on Broadway) and Miranda Haymon (Roundabout Resident Director) and Playwrights/Composers Nathan Alan Davis (Nat Turner in Jerusalem), Adam Gwon (Scotland, PA) and Daniel Zaitchik (Darling Grenadine).  

All workshops are planning to be held via Zoom, so no matter the location, students from all over may join. Tickets for the courses are listed at $130 and, depending on the workshop, spaces are limited.

]]> In partnership with Apollo Theater, The Classical Theatre of Harlem presents the world premiere of The First Noel for the winter season. Performances will be from Dec 13-31, with previews Dec. 11-12.

Composer/lyricist Jason Michael Webb (Brooklyn Tabernacle, Motown: The Musical, Violet) and writer/lyricist Lelund Durond Thompson (CTH artistic associate and founder of YellaFella Entertainment) created the commissioned work over two years. The duo has re-imagined classic Christmas songs as well as created new melodies designed to become holiday favorites. The soundscape is a wonderland of disco, rock and gospel genres.

Performed in the 200-seat intimate Soundstage, the musical follows three generations of a Harlem family still affected by the tragic loss of a loved one. An unexpected visit from Grandma reveals some long-absent Christmas joy. It is a universal story about how a community is healed, one family at a time, as everyday people do extraordinary things to help one another receive the gift of love.

CTH artistic director Ty Jones has described it as “Dickens for the 21st Century.” With Equity principal auditions taking place in September, the cast has yet to be announced. In May, when Broadway Black reported the production as “bringing something fresh to the holiday season,” the excitement was much like that of Webb under the Apollo marquee.

Broadnax III. Broadnax, an associate professor of theatre at Pennsylvania State University whose work has been featured at Scotland’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, also has showcased at The Kennedy Center with his award-winning The Hip Hop Project. The original play, which has toured nationally, was conceived, directed and choreographed by Broadnax.

Having opened its 15th anniversary season with a benefit concert featured the music of the Griffin Matthews–Matt Gould Witness Uganda (now titled Invisible Thread) at the Soundstage, CTH returns to the historic Harlem venue for its official debut.

Founded in 1999, CTH presents stories through the lens of the African Diaspora that honor the cultural legacy of the neighborhood in which it was founded. In a Theater Pizzazz interview, Jones notes CTH was in financial distress and lost the confidence of many supporters when he arrived in 2009. Now CTH has attracted major donors and has developed notable programming that reflects the diversity of ideas and racial tapestry that is America.

“We are part of the renovation of the community,” said Jones in his interview of the changes Harlem continues to experience. “We want to engage with the community.”
