Quincy Tyler Bernstine (Neva) stars in a new Off-Broadway play by Anne Washburn that gives a behind the scenes look of what really happens before the curtains come up.

Everyone in the theatre world knows that when you look at your calendar and see the words “Tech Week” there will usually be a large collective sigh and a lot of coffee. Actors, directors, designers, producers, everyone involved in the production is on pins and needles. For those who may not be familiar, Tech is the week when lights, sets, costumes and special effects are all threaded in with actors’ performances. It’s spent tightening up everything and rehearsals usually runs the longest.

Ironically the show’s title, 10 out of 12, is a well known Actors’ Equity rule stating that actors can work only 10 hours out of any 12-hour period, which can make that tech week a little more stressful.

Playwright Anne Washburn gives audiences an all-access pass to the tech process in her eye-opening new play, 10 Out of 12. The production, based on her experiences (she took notes during her tech rehearsals over the years), unfolds during technical rehearsals for a new show.

From the SohoRep website:

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to tech. Around you, a company of 14 is engaged in the very peculiar—and peculiarly impossible—task of making a new play. You’ll have a seat next to the sound designer as he mixes cues. You’ll eavesdrop on backstage gossip as it happens over headset. You’ll watch the director struggle to contain the uncontainable.

The show opened May 26 and will run until July 15 at Soho Rep located at 46 Walker Street (b/t Broadway and Church) in New York City. Tickets can be purchased here. Limited rush tickets ($30 or $20 for students with valid ID) are available for most performances at the box office on a first-come, first-served basis, 15-minutes prior to each performance.
