Winner of all the awards, Whoopi Goldberg will perform at the Kennedy Center on July 17th for a one-night only comedy event. Since her first Broadway show in 1984, Goldberg’s comedy has been both irreverent and introspective, often challenging social issues. This balance and style is reflected in her personal activism as well as her acting, which spans from uproarious comedies to heart-wrenching dramas and everything in between. This diversity has Goldberg in an exclusive group: recipients of the EGOT. Goldberg has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and a Tony. She received an Emmy Award in 2002 for producing Beyond Tara: The Extraordinary Life of Hattie McDaniel. Her Broadway show won a Grammy for Best Comedy Recording in 1985. Her performance in the film Ghost won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1990, becoming just the second black woman in the history of the Academy Awards to win this award. And Goldberg won a Tony as a producer of Thoroughly Modern Millie in 2002.

Goldberg’s range of achievements includes producing and starring in August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom in 2003, and starring in iconic films such as “Corrina, Corrina,” “Ghosts of Mississippi,” “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” and the legendary “The Color Purple” for which she received her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Goldberg has also conquered television, producing Lifetime’s “Strong Medicine,” portraying “Queen Constantina” in the 1997 TV adaptation of “Cinderella,” and following in the footsteps of one of her inspirations, Nichelle Nichols, as a recurring character on “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”

Since 2007, Whoopi Goldberg has been the moderator and co-host of ABC’s “The View,” bringing comedy, clarity, and occasional controversy to many issues of the day.

In addition to Goldberg’s one woman show in 1984 and the 20th Anniversary show in 2004, she is a member of Comic Relief USA, a charity organization that raises money for homeless people in need of health care assistance. It began in 1986 and was hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, Billy Crystal, and the late Robin Williams.

Whoopi Goldberg certainly has a wealth of experiences and events to discuss in her one night only performance and it is certainly not to be missed.

New York’s American Ballet Theater (ABT) celebrates its 75th anniversary with two exclusive performances this summer. ABT Soloist Misty Copeland will perform the lead roles in both Romeo & Juliet on June 20 and Swan Lake on June 24. Copeland will be the first Black woman to play Juliet in Romeo and Juliet and to play the role of Odette/Odile, the Swan Queen, in Swan Lake for ABT. She is also the third Black female soloist ever to dance for the American Ballet Theatre.

From ABT: Kenneth MacMillan’s masterful interpretation of Shakespeare’s enduring romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, has become one of ABT’s signature productions. Against a sumptuous setting in Renaissance Italy, MacMillan weaves a dance tapestry rich in character nuance and sensuality, and Sergei Prokofiev’s stirring music underscores the lyric beauty and passion of this beloved ballet’s star-crossed lovers. Copeland will perform as Juliet during the matinee performance on June 20 at 2:00pm in the Metropolitan Opera House.

Set to Tchaikovsky’s glorious score, Swan Lake’s romantic tale of love and forgiveness is often considered the world’s most beloved ballet. With breathtaking choreography, lavish costumes and visually spectacular sets evoking a lakeside Renaissance court, ABT’s production “glides to the forefront of stagings all over the world. The fabled lake of the swans has risen into view, inspiring awe for its mystery and magic.” (The Wall Street Journal). Copeland will perform as Odette/Odile, the Swan Queen, during the matinee performance on June 24 at 2:00pm in the Metropolitan Opera House.

Misty Copeland made history earlier this year at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC when she and fellow dancer Brooklyn Mack performed the lead roles in Swan Lake, the first Black duo in American ballet to do so. More about their groundbreaking performance can be seen HERE.
