Four-time Tony Award nominee Camille A. Brown will choreograph and is poised to breathe new life into this timeless classic. Additional casting and creative team members will be announced at a later date. Including Arthur Laurents’s book, Jule Styne’s music, and Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics, “Gypsy” is set to reopen the legendary Majestic Theatre, adding another glorious chapter to its illustrious history.

Producers Tom Kirdahy and Mara Isaacs, along with Kevin Ryan and Diane Scott Carter, have expressed their excitement at the prospect of bringing Audra McDonald’s unparalleled talent to the forefront of this production. Their vision of pairing McDonald with the esteemed George C. Wolfe is set to captivate audiences and reaffirm the musical’s status as one of the greatest of all time.

Kirdahy and Isaacs expressed their delight in a statement: “Sometimes the theatre gods smile upon us. This is one such time. We could not be more honored to bring this particular ‘Gypsy’ to the Broadway stage and also include the singular Camille A. Brown as part of our creative team.”

The revival of Gypsy promises to be a momentous occasion. Performances are scheduled to begin on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at the newly renovated Majestic Theatre. The official opening is on Thursday, December 19, 2024, marking a milestone in Broadway history.

Audra McDonald’s casting as “Rose” has generated significant anticipation, with critics and fans eagerly awaiting her interpretation of this iconic character. Known for her unparalleled versatility and polish on stage, McDonald is poised to imbue Gypsy with a newfound depth and nuance.

George C. Wolfe, hailed as “a titan of the American theatre” by The New Yorker, reunites with McDonald following their collaboration on the Tony-nominated production of “Shuffle Along, or, The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed.” Their partnership promises to bring a fresh perspective to “Gypsy,” breathing new life into this beloved classic.

The for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf Broadway revival written by Ntozake Shange will play the Booth Theatre this spring!

The fully reimagined production, directed and choreographed by Tony Award nominee Camille A. Brown (Once On This Island, Choir Boy, Fire Shut Up in My Bones – Metropolitan Opera Fall 2021), begins performances at Broadway’s Booth Theatre (222 West 45^th Street), home to the original 1976 production, on Friday, March 4, 2022, with the opening night set for Thursday, March 24, 2022. 

Casting will be announced at a later date.

As previously reported, the show marks Camille A. Brown’s directorial debut on Broadway. Brown, who served as choreographer on the 2019 production of the play at The Public Theater off-Broadway, will also continue in her role as choreographer on Broadway, making her the first Black woman to serve as both director and choreographer on a Broadway production in more than 65 years.

There is magic in the air, for colored girls… magic! Antonyo Award winner and Tony Award nominee Camille A. Brown will direct and choreograph the upcoming production of Ntozake Shange’s for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf on Broadway in 2022. This will mark her directorial debut on Broadway and also make her the first Black woman to serve as both director and choreographer on a Broadway production in more than 65 years. She follows in the footsteps of Katherine Dunham who directed and choreographed several revues and a musical in the 1940s.

Brown won the 2020 Antonyo Award for Best Choreography for her work on the Off-Broadway production of for colored girls… at The Public Theatre. Among her lengthy choreography credits are two proven Broadway Black favorites from previous seasons, Once On This Island and Choir Boy by Tarrell Alvin McCraney. She’s also no stranger to the small screen, known for her work on “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert,” the Oscar-nominated Netflix film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, as well as the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Porgy and Bess. She is the founder and artistic director of the award-winning dance company Camille A. Brown and Dancers.

“I’m extremely thrilled and honored to helm this new production of for colored girls…,” said Brown. “It’s an amazing feeling to bring this seminal show back to Broadway 45 years after it opened at the Booth Theatre on September 15, 1976. I look forward to diving into the divine Ntozake Shange’s choreopoem and celebrating her legacy.”

Filled with passion, humor, and raw honesty, legendary playwright/poet Ntozake Shange’s formchanging choreopoem tells the stories of seven Black women using poetry, song and movement. With unflinching honesty and emotion, each woman voices her survival story of having to exist in a world shaped by sexism and racism.

Nelle Nugent, Ron Simons and Kenneth Teaton will produce for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf on Broadway. Further details including a cast, creative team, venue and performance dates are to be announced.

Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC) continues to deliver virtual theatre by announcing their “MTC Virtual Stage 2021” Programming.

This includes a variety of performances from choreography, new monologues, and works previously shown live on stage. The lineup includes Camille A. Brown, Charlayne Woodard, Octavia Chavez-Richmond, Ari Groover, Samantha Williams, Daryl Waters, Juel D. Lane, Richard Wesley, and Oz Scott.

In addition, MTC is currently accepting monologue submissions from high school students for the Student Monologue Challenge and selected monologue responses will air on Wednesdays beginning February 10.
