]]> If ever there was a time we needed to believe in fairytales, there’s no better time than this. Disney+ has just announced that they will be adding Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, starring Brandy and Whitney Houston, to their roster of films at midnight on February 12.

Since the tv movie aired in 1997 on ABC’s Wonderful World of Disney, viewers have been unable to see a full version of the classic film in over 20 years! But just in time for Black History Month, we get the gift of our first Black Cinderella and our first Black Fairy Godmother.

The 1997 musical classic was ahead of its time for casting some of the most diverse performers on Broadway and in Hollywood. R&B vocalist Brandy played the title role of Cinderella, while her Prince Charming was played by Paolo Mantalban. The King and Queen were played by Tony-nominee Victor Garber and EGOT, Whoopi Goldberg. The role of The Wicked Stepmother was brilliantly played by the legendary Tony-winner, Bernadette Peters; who alongside her onscreen daughters, Veanne Cox as Calliope, and Natalie Desselle as Minerva (who we recently lost in December of last year). Tony-winner Jason Alexander played the royal assistant, Lionel. And rounding out the stellar cast is none other than the “The Voice” herself, Whitney Houston, who played The Fairy Godmother, whose rendition of “Impossible” gave hope and inspiration to every Black boy and girl to believe in miracles and believe in yourself.

Brandy and Whoopi Goldberg reunited on The View today to make the formal announcement. There is music in all of us, and impossible things are happening every day!

]]> “So long, farewell to you my friend. Goodbye for now until we meet again.” In the words of Out of The Box, it is almost time to bid farewell to one of our favorite Broadway Black stars Brandy Norwood, as her run as “Roxie Hart” in Chicago comes to a close this weekend. If you have yet to make your way to the Ambassador Theatre to see her, clear your schedule and make time for it because it’s a performance you wont want to miss.

I was fortunate enough to see the show last week and can genuinely say it was such a treat to watch her in action. She brings her own flare to “Roxie” that is so uniquely Brandy and is so fitting for the character. Those runs? I see you Brandy. I see you. She’ll make you laugh, she’ll make you cry, but most importantly she’ll make you root for a character that can be questionably unethical. To me, that’s what a really good performance is supposed to do.

Brandy started her run as “Roxie Hart” April 28 and originally was supposed to end her run June 21, however due to rave reviews and popular demand her run was extended until August 2nd. Chicago marks Brandy’s Broadway debut — though it isn’t her first musical. She starred opposite Whitney Houston in the 1997 TV adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. But make no mistake, we doubt that this will be Brandy’s last time on the Great White Way, in fact she even said so herself in her exclusive interview with Broadway Black that she would love to come back to Broadway as “Annie Oakley” in Annie Get Your Gun (Come on Broadway producers! Let’s make this happen!).

]]> The heavens are looking out for all the Brandy Norwood, aka B-Rocka, fans, or “Starz” as she likes to call them. We’ve heard it over and over again, “I wish she was going to be in the show longer so I can see her!” Now, your wish has been granted. The Grammy Award winning star has extended her run in Chicago as Roxie Hart. She will now appear in the Broadway musical until August 2nd.

The R&B/Pop star was previously set to end her run at Ambassador Theatre on June 21. However, she’s sticking around for a little while longer because she’s just that good and the people want to see her! Just be mindful not to schedule your tickets for certain dates if you want to see her. Norwood will not be performing in the musical on June 22, June 23, June 27 or June 28.

Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids.
